Fancy a scoop of breast milk ice cream?

Update: Breast Milk Ice-cream Seized For Safety Tests (2/3/11)

How enterprising. A restaurant in Covent Garden is selling ice cream made from breast milk. It’s called Baby Gaga and the milk has been donated by 15 women in response to an ad on an online mothers’ forum. It’s expressed on site and pasteurised so it’s probably more digestible than non-organic cows’ milk, as it’s natural, organic and has no additives.

As long as it’s been treated I can’t see the problem (how healthy is it if the donor smokes and/or uses prescription or recreational drugs?). I imagine it’s quite sweet and you can’t tell the difference. Just the idea of it will make some people feel squeamish.

I’m sure the novelty factor will encourage people to try it but at £14 per scoop it’s not going to be a regular thing. Maybe the owner, Matt O’Conner, would consider donating some of the milk or a percentage of the profits to the neonatal units in hospitals that desperately need breast milk, if the take-up is good?

From a commercial perspective (hard times and all) maybe this will encourage more women to breast feed given that there’s a financial incentive (you get paid £15 per 10oz donation for supplying the breast milk).

It reminds me of the scene in ‘Borat’ where Borat gives ‘Bob’ Barr, a former member of the US House of Representatives, some cheese from his wife:

Borat: “My wife make this cheese.”
‘Bob’ Barr: “It’s very nice.”
Borat: “She make it from milk from her tits” (at which point Bob’s expression sours).

I think it’s a great idea and would love to see some of the milk donated to where it’s most needed. The Icecreamists are right in that no one has done anything interesting with ice cream in the last 100 years.

The Icecreamists, Covent Garden (very sexy website btw, love it)
